A linked device lets you use the same WhatsApp account on another supported device and work with the messages available there. It is not a guarantee that every historical message will be visible. Use linking only for your own account or with the account holder’s authorization.
What official linking provides
WhatsApp’s linked-device guide allows up to four linked devices alongside the primary phone. The primary phone is needed to register the account and link new devices. Each linked device connects independently, with end-to-end encryption.
ChatVigil’s assessment: think of a linked device as another account endpoint. It is meaningful access, so decide who may use it and for what purpose before connecting. A shared computer deserves particular care because someone using that computer may be able to use an active account session.
Why older messages may be missing
At our check, WhatsApp’s guide acknowledged an issue where some linked devices do not display up to a year of chat history and advised checking the primary device and keeping the linked app updated. That is a documented issue, not a universal one-year history limit.
ChatVigil’s assessment: distinguish a synchronization gap from a deletion. If you need a particular conversation, compare what is available on your own primary device before concluding it is lost. Do not promise someone else that linking once will reveal their complete account history.
Is a linked device a backup?
No—do not rely on it as an independent archive. WhatsApp’s deletion documentation says message deletion syncs across online devices where you are logged in.
ChatVigil’s assessment: if your goal is preserving your own important records, treat that as a separate requirement. Seeing a message on a second screen does not establish that it will remain there after an account change or deletion. Plan around a documented backup workflow instead of assuming synchronization equals preservation.

Review access to your account
WhatsApp says you can review sessions under Settings → Linked devices, select a device and log it out. Its guide warns that linking through unofficial apps or websites can put the account at risk.
ChatVigil’s assessment: periodically review the devices you recognize, especially after using a shared machine. Ask a prospective service what kind of account access it requires and how revocation works before proceeding. Do not share a linking code or authorize an unfamiliar session merely to preview a claimed feature.
